Houston, Texas Burn Accident Attorneys

Burn injuries often require long-term hospitalization, skin grafts, and reconstructive surgery. As a result, burn injuries are often some of the most expensive and painful injuries to treat. A search on the internet regarding the average cost of a burn injury suggests reported hospital costs ranging from roughly $50,000 up to $600,000 or $700,000. Since serious burn injuries require surgery, pain medication, skin grafts, and physical therapy, it can take months if not years for a full recovery. At the Krist Law Firm, our attorneys work with experienced medical economists and life care planners in determining the financial impact of a burn injury. Working with cost data maintained by HMOs, government studies, and insurers, we can accurately project a burn injury victim's future medical expenses, lost wages, and diminished quality of life.

If you've been seriously burned due to a fire, explosion, or exposure to chemical agents, contact burn injury lawyers at the Krist Law Firm today to schedule a free consultation to discuss your case.

Kinds of Burns

In general there are four kinds of burns:

  • Chemical Burns: Caused by contact with acids, alkalis, or other causative agents. The Krist Law Firm once recovers $1,750,000 for a chemical burn where the client needed only $400 in medical treatment.
  • Thermal Burns: Caused by fire, boiling water, steam, or proximity to intense heat.
  • Light Burns: Caused by over exposure to sunlight or ultraviolet light.
  • Radiation Burns: Caused by exposure to radioactive materials.

Severity of Burn Injuries:

Burn injuries fall into one of four categories:

  • First degree burns: The outer or first layer of skin is burned, resulting in reddened skin that either peels or heals within a week or so.
  • Second degree burns: The first and second layer of skin is effected, resulting in increased pain, blisters, and scarring.
  • Third degree burns: All three major layers of skin are burned, as well as underlying tissue. Third degree burns often require skin grafts and scarring is permanent.
  • Fourth degree burns: Burns that consume not only skin and tissue, but also portions of bones.

Treating Burn Injuries

The severity and location of a burn can also lead to physical disability. Amputations, loss of sensation, or reduced mobility must also be taken into consideration when evaluating the cost of a burn injury. Our attorneys have extensive experience in working with burn injury victims and their families in making sure they receive compensation proportional to their medical needs and pain and suffering.
